Black Sage (Salvia Mellifera)

Black Sage Salvia mellifera is native to coastal California and northern Baja Mexico.

Its growing range has been home to the native Chusmash people. The Chumash have an array of cultural accomplishments from astronomy, boatmaking, and other skilled crafts, to art, religious ceremony, hunting, and fishing. They have a rich history of connecting with the land, and Black Sage has been their potent health ally.

Specifically, its fresh leaves and stems, soaked in water throughout the day, made for a “sun tea” used as foot soak to ease pain. This was especially helpful after tedious days.

Black Sage’s aromatic presence continues to fill California’s coastal canyons, trails, and green spaces. In lieu of wildcrafting this native beauty, we are committed to organically growing black sage in our network.

Inspired by the native Chumash, we are harvesting and offering this plant’s healing gifts as foot soak to those who can benefit most. We prepackage the dried leaves and stems for convenient use. And, as sunny days may be inconsistent, we instead instruct steeping in boiling water.

We hope that those who use this gift of Black Sage will experience the wonder of plant magic.
